Getting to Beaufort SC by air and road

Beaufort sits between Savannah and Charleston. Most flying visitors need a rental car, and every arrival finishes on Lowcountry roads that cross tidal creeks and marsh.

South approach

Start with Savannah for the default flight search

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport combines broad commercial service with the direct southern approach to Beaufort. It is the sensible first search for a Beaufort-only trip; reserve the rental car with the flight because the coast and Sea Islands are spread out.

North approach

Use Charleston for a better flight or a two-city trip

Charleston International Airport brings a longer northern drive. Choose it when the nonstop or fare is meaningfully better, or when Charleston belongs in the same trip; it offers little advantage for a Beaufort-only weekend with an equivalent Savannah flight.

Regional option

Use Hilton Head only when the limited schedule fits

Hilton Head Island Airport can shorten the airport-to-Beaufort map, but its smaller schedule and rental-car inventory narrow the choice. It makes the most sense with a useful nonstop or a Hilton Head stay already in the itinerary.

Final approach

The final miles cross tidal rivers before US 21 reaches Beaufort.

Southbound and northbound airport routes approach from different sides of the Lowcountry, but both finish on two-lane and divided roads rather than an interstate exit beside downtown. A Bay Street room can eliminate dinner driving after arrival. Keep the car for Penn Center, Hunting Island, Port Royal, and marsh departures.
