Downtown on foot

Beaufort River

Narrated Beaufort

Beyond downtown
US 21 leads east from Beaufort to Penn Center and Brick Baptist Church, where the focus is Reconstruction and Gullah Geechee history. A guided kayak trip enters the tidal-creek habitat. Hunting Island reaches the Atlantic through beach, lighthouse, lagoon, and maritime forest. A full park day leaves Penn Center and a guided paddle for another day.
East of Beaufort
St. Helena Island
Penn Center and Brick Baptist Church extend Beaufort’s Reconstruction and Gullah Geechee story onto St. Helena Island. Check current museum and tour hours, then visit as a history destination rather than a roadside pause before the beach.
Tidal creeks
A guided paddle replaces the roadside marsh view with tidal creeks, wildlife habitat, and commentary from the water. It is a distinct Beaufort outing, not a substitute for the Atlantic beach; confirm the launch point and weather policy before booking.
Hunting Island
Hunting Island State Park combines five miles of beach, a historic lighthouse, maritime forest, saltwater lagoon, and fishing access. Several hours allow more than a quick lighthouse photograph. Check current park advisories and lighthouse status before leaving Beaufort.
